So I'm realizing this playlist is mostly songs sung by women. Sometimes I toy with the idea of specializing in music exclusively sung by women but I don't like to limit myself. This led me to get curious about whether women are still underrepresented on the radio.
Unfortunately, yes. Women still get less radio play than men do from what I'm seeing. Country radio does a particularly very bad job. As recently as 2023, 88.5% of the artists to top Billboard's 2023 Country Airplay chart were solo male artists, with only 5.75% being solo female acts. In addition, there's a gender gap among streaming service listeners as well across all genres. In 2023, Every Noise (which is now defunct after Spotify laid off a ton of humans) reported that when listeners choose their own music, they choose females artists only 23.1% of the time. Enjoy my mostly women playlist. Apparently it's still needed!

I was transient for much of March so the playlist is later and longer than I planned. There are a handful of early 90s radio hits mixed in with some great new indie rock releases.
I'm not entirely certain why Celine Dion popped in my head but I suspect it's because she was at peak popularity when I first started playing drums and I was putting together my drum set recently for the first time in a while.
I just discovered Polo and Pan. I'm very impressed. They had me at Beth Ditto. She's been one of my favorites since discovering The Gossip.
Enjoy.
